What Members Thought

2.5 stars, rounded up for the first third of the book
This started so promisingly! I was convinced it was going to be a 4 or 5 star read for me. But then it just lost all momentum and started to feel repetitive and self indulgent. How disappointing.

About seven years ago I read A Heart So White, a book similar in a sense to The Infatuations. In both there is a murder mystery of a sort, and the background is unfolded slowly and beautifully to bring the reader to the final result. In a sense, the reader learns along with the narrator.
But where A Heart So White was profound in much of its beauty, The Infatuations veered more into an almost incoherent rambling.

An interesting murder mystery narrated by a woman, Maria, who admires a couple from afar each day that they all have breakfast within the same café. Then, one day, the man is brutally murdered and Maria introduces herself to the wife. Through Maria we then learn who killed this woman's husband and why.
All in all a solid read. Marias shows incredible insight into human nature. However, I found the plot to be somewhat lacking and the ending to be somewhat concerning. Other than that, a pretty good ...more

Maria watches a couple having breakfast at the same restaurant every morning. One day they do not appear and she learns that Miguel, the husband, has been brutally murdered. Maria offers her condolences to the widow, and finds herself caught up in a strange and ambiguous relationship that leads her to question the apparently random killing.

I read this book under the wrong premise. I have been looking for books set in Madrid as I am planning a trip there and this title showed up in a list somewhere. I was under the impression then that the city of Madrid would be prominent in the story which isn’t the case.
Had I not been so frustrated about the fact that Madrid and its sites are rarely mentioned, maybe I could have liked this book more. It is one of those genre bending murder mysteries, where the murder itself takes a second place ...more

While Marias may never top his monumental Your Face Tomorrow, The Infatuations is nonetheless excellent. Although the narrative is told in typical Marias inward-facing style, it still creates a sense of outward dread and physical danger as information, or misinformation, is revealed. The plot takes us through various explanations for the murder until the end result is that they all seem just as likely, or just as unlikely. Linking to The Three Muskateers and Balzac’s Colonel Chabert, both of whi
