Quaint black comedy with echoes of Muriel Spark and Iris Murdoch, Fludd is set in a dreary Catholic village near Manchester. The parish priest, Father Angwin, has lost his faith but continues to go through the motions with his stolid congregation. The nuns at the convent run the school and control the local children with corporal punishment, and the reforming Bishop wants to modernise Church practices. Then the enigmatic Father Fludd arrives to begin his work of transformation.

Maybe even 4.5 points. It is an odd, surprising, funny, story of transformation turned inside-out. It is also clever and touching, with a few truly profound insights thrown in. It is also short, under 200 pages. Recommended.
