What Members Thought

I understand why this author is loved by the literary elites. But, had I not known that she held multiple literary awards, I am not sure I would have recognized the quality of this collection of short stories, sketches and vignettes. None of them truly engaged me, although several I did appreciate more than most.

Although Flights is described as a novel, it is not a traditional one. It has also been called essayistic, as it consists of a number of short stories interspersed with brief ruminations on travel and anatomy. These themes are also used to connect the stories, which travel through the centuries on a voyage of discovery centred on the human body.

3 stars for the stories, 1 star for the exceedingly banal essays on travel psychology, Wikipedia as mystical source of knowledge, etc. I don't want to read a high schooler's journal.

I slogged through this one. I think that it was just to experimental for me. I also don't like stories that fail to come together at some point.
