I read the 1920s translation and I think the book suffered. It read like a novel of Sir Walter Scott, which puts a distance between me and the story. Kristen is a spoiled brat who gets seduced by a bad sort of man and decides she loves him. I don't see why the author got a Nobel.

Read it if you are interested in early 20th century European literature.

I was never engaged by the story, the characters or the setting. I always find it a little difficult to like any character that makes such obviously wrong choices for no good reason.
