I'm generally not drawn to relationship novels, but I was hooked on this one right from the beginning. Partly because the characters were older, but even more so because of the stark contrast between the narrator's careful language and the unsettled way she lived her life - clearly there was some complex self-delusion going on here that I wanted to follow. Shani Mootoo knows how to write about messy complicated people and their relationships.

I would have given this a five star review if it has stuck with Priya's point of view as an unreliable narrator, but the switch to Alex's sidebar took away rather than enhanced the narrative.

The ending was a little abrupt, without a resolution to the friction in Priya and Alex's relationship.
