I have to give this one five stars, although the subject matter is not really what I usually gravitate towards.

Difficult to give a synopsis of the book without major spoilers, but it is at its heart about a man's search for meaning and redemption and how a person measures their own self-worth. All the characters are flawed to some extent, but the reader is for the most part sympathetic to each of their choices in life. As far as I can tell, there is no one quite like Robertson Davies. He takes a simple story and elevates it to something special. I don't think it would really have mattered what subject matter he picked to write about, the quality and style of his writing would have made it fascinating.
This story about a small town boy in Eastern Canada and his life through WWI and beyond is riveting, enchanting and captivating.
