Hoo boy, what a ride! This book is often categorized as an epic fantasy, but I think it's more like epic mythology - more Homer than George RR Martin. It's a cinematic, visceral world - sometimes swimming in viscera, blood, shit, sweat, piss, swamp and body funk from bodies of all kinds, human and monstrous. Plot and action drive the novel, and at first characters seem to be all passion and reaction, but as you follow them their psyches are exposed in spite of themselves, and larger themes emerg

I thought this was great, really well done. I loved the voice that blended different African mythologies with the author's imagination. I wish I had bought the book, I will have to look for an edition I can afford.
My only complaint was that it was a little vulgar. I loved the phrase "fuck the gods!" but all the talk about koos and assholes got a little rough.
I am so interested in seeing this on film. The rights have already been sold! I just hope they keep the homosexuality in instead of washi ...more

I have listened to approximately 50% of this book and I do not have it in me to continue.

I wasn't able to finish reading it. I kept falling asleep, the writing was so convoluted and difficult to follow it just made my eyes close.
