Read for the 2022 Roundtable Fantasy Book Tournament. Set in Eastern Canada around 1000 AD, it's about a clash of cultures between Inuits and Vikings and, a bit less so, Christians. It starts out feeling like historical fiction, then some magical realism trickles in, but by the end it's a flat out fantasy story. I preferred the parts that felt mostly realistic but with a few magical elements creeping in.

It's a really ambitious book with a lot of research behind it and it deserves a lot of prais

This book really does fall in the middle, not awesome but not terrible. The main character came across as very abrasive, which put me off a little. Then, I dislike stories where plot points rely on the main character doing something stupid to move forward. Also where the story it is so obvious that they are going to f**k it all up so that there is some issue to resolve and make the story more interesting.

I found this astonishing. The beginning was slow and sweet and slightly lyrical, but did not draw me in. Around 50% of the way through, I was a little peeved. THIS is what you were building to? I had the genre wrong, I thought, and what on earth will she do with the final 50%? But at 75% I realized what she was really doing. Deft, and a little tricksy as befits the subject. Well done, in the end. Three cheers. This was a labor of love on the author’s part (the notes at the end are especially wor ...more

Magical story of the meeting of cultures and the meeting of gods. Thoroughly researched with a believable setting. I really believed in Omat's spiritual journeys and the results from them.

Also a great historical fiction of the time the Inuits and the Vikings were trying to move into northeastern Canada; the Vikings failed, the Inuits succeeded and continue to live there.

4 stars Almost everyone should enjoy this book. It may go up to three stars if I keep thinking about the book.
