This third episode of The Alexandria Quartet was easily my favourite so far. Once again, the entangled lives of Nessim and Justine, Darley, Pursewarden, Clea and Balthazar are seen from a fresh perspective - this time it is British diplomat David Mountolive who takes central stage. As a young man he spends time with Nessim’s family and develops a passion for his mother Leila. Later, he returns to Alexandria as Ambassador and finds that his memories may have been founded on illusions.

A more traditional novel structure, this adds yet another massive twist to the the two previous books. I found it easier to read and enjoyed it more than the previous two. I'm waiting now to see what other secrets will be revealed in Clea.
