This is the kind of adult fantasy novel I like best: a slow-rolling yet compelling story that doesn't get in the way of characterization and nuanced relationships. Cazaril and his young lady charge Iselle are delightful in their interactions and surprising in their strength. Yaaaay!! So much fun! I knew I liked fantasy when it's done like this! Totally reminds me of when I was a kid and would just read for hours totally spellbound. And the perfect book to read during the stressful time of moving. Going to save the 2nd book for when I go to the beach in June. Or can I wait that long? ...more

I am finding that I love Bujolds fantasy series far better than the science fiction series. Having started with the second book and then reading the first, I had some idea that all would work out in the end but it didn't ruin the story at all. There is a fabulous main character, a gripping storyline, gods you might not want to answer your prayers and lots of action. This series was a great find.

Solid alternate world, with gods that interact (rarely) with humans. Protagonist is not the standard young, adventurous, etc. hero.

3 stars - Good if you like the genre. May like it if it's not your genre.
