Trollope decided to spend another Palliser book explaining how hard it is for a man without money to serve in Parliament, but this time he spiffed up the story with a great "Love to Hate Her" character, and a surprisingly baroque incident involving a necklace. Lizzie Eustace is infuriating, but she is well drawn, and I especially loved how Trollope showed how she was able to justify every ridiculous thing that she did first by omissions, then by half-truths, and then flat-out lies.
