This is a collection of short stories of contemporary Mexican women. All are written in the first person narration. All feature acts of violence, most perpetrated by the female narrator, and many depicting violence against women. There is a “tough girl” voice in all the stories. Any of these on their own would have been good. But together, the anger was a bit too much and all the voices began to sound alike.

The female-centric aspect of the stories was a real appeal for me, as was having the women not only portrayed as victims, but as survivors, it shows the desperation in their lives, but also an undeniable strength in their determination to keep going despite it all.
The interconnected nature of the characters' stories is done really well, the author weaves their lives together in a way that feels natural, making you invested in how their paths cross, and how their choices impact one another.
