I saw the miniseries a number of years ago and from what i can recall it follows the book very closely. The book was an enjoyable urban fantasy with a really unique perspective literally. The concept of falling through the cracks of the "real world" has to resonate with anyone who has ever contemplated the plight of the homeless in their city.
