A treasure trove of reflections and ideas on life that should not be mistaken for a shallow aphorismic self-help guide but an eloquent, rich digest of Proust's very worthwhile observations.
About half of the book describe Proust's fascinating character, the other his and de Botton's views on life, specifically: on appreciating life, on friendship, love, art, suffering, how to read and think about books, etc.

I read this as part of my Proust Preparation. I'm reading stuff about Proust before diving in, hopefully in 2014.
This book is presented as a 'Self-Help' guide but that aspect shouldn't be taken too literally. Alain de Botton tries to present philosophical subjects to the average reader and has written several books and presented several TV programmes over the years with this aim.
He does an admirable job really - some of the 'lessons' I would guess are a bit obvious but it's all written in an en ...more

On my way home with In Search of Lost Time, I'm finally allowing myself to read others on the journey and conjoin my experience. de Botton really adds to my love, my pleasure, my understanding. It's enlightening to join him and develop the richness of my relationship with the work.

Makes more sense of the heady stuff in Proust's original 7 volumes. Not sure if I will live long enough to read the French version, probably Baudelaire's 100 poems come first.
