Sebastian St. Cyr finds himself in an unusual dilemma when his friend and surgeon, Paul Gibson, works on a resurrected body of a young man who reportedly died of heart failure but determines he was murdered. Sebastian must surreptitiously investigate without disclosing how he came to know of the true circumstances of Alexander Ross' death. In the meantime, he's also preparing for his marriage in less than a week.

Four and a half stars
I may have a new favorite for the series here. Nope, no question about it, new favorite. Picking up roughly 2-3 weeks after the last book, we find that Gibson, Sebastian's anatomist/surgeon, friend has inadvertently stumbled upon the murder of a governmental official. Of course, Sebastian can't help but get involved. Now I'm not going to lie, this mystery left me a bit confused. There was too much political stuff going on for me to feel like I ever had a good grasp on things ...more

Sebastian St. Cyr comes to the aid of his friend, anatomist Paul Gibson, who has discovered that his newly acquired “speciman” is, in fact, a murder victim. As an employee of the Foreign Office, Alexander Ross’s death leads Sebastian to the upper echelons of the diplomatic corps with suspects from Turkey, Russia, Sweden, France and the United States. What would be important enough for these people to risk war in order to conceal?

I found this installment a bit harder to get into than previous books, however once the action started I was all in. Great mystery, chemistry and characters. I really enjoyed Gibson having a larger role in this book and he provided (along with Sebastian) some of the lighter, comedic parts. However now that I know what Paul Gibson does with spare body parts from autopsies, I may never look at visits to his house in the same light.

Reread 2016 - keeping my original rating of 5 stars. The mystery in this book is very complicated and I'm not sure I understood all the nuances any better the second time around. Lots of bodies and lots of suspects in a sea of political intrigue. What makes this book a 5 star read is the evolving relationship between Sebastian and Hero - a pure joy to read.

The more I read this series the more I need to read. I do love these characters. Sebastian and Hero are learning more about one another while they solve a murder. It is interesting how this couple, who have so many secrets work through their issues.
Like every story the mystery is complicated and takes the reader down many paths that reveal interesting tidbits about Hero and Sebastian.

Regency London: July 1812. How do you set about solving a murder no one can reveal has been committed? — That's the challenge confronting C.S. Harris's aristocratic soldier-turned-sleuth Sebastian St. Cyr when his friend, surgeon and "anatomist" Paul Gibson, illegally buys the cadaver of a young man. This is the 6th book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. It is one of my favorite series and I love at the characters. C.S. Harris does her homework on the historical facts. Her stories are political p

I know some people think I am hard reviewer, but I actually not as harsh as you may think. I reserve five stars for this books I really want everyone to read and are special. These are books that I love with all my heart and will reread again. They have made a difference to me in some way even if it's just in my heart. I will also be biased when anyone tries to tell me that it is not as good as I think it is. With my 5 star rating, I know it makes my friends take another glance at ...more

The political intrigue in this series continues to get more and more fascinating. Set against the backdrop of the scramble for European alliances in the age of Napoleon and the War of 1812, this mystery manages to educate as well as it entertains. The growing relationship between Hero and Sebastian is endearing, and though at times they can be hard to root for as a couple, I still find myself rooting for them both anyway. I'm very curious to see where things go from here.

Perhaps 4.5 stars
The bodies pile up in the political part of the story, quite a bit based on historical realities during Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the beginning of the War of 1812.
There was some humor with the re-interment of anatomical remains.
There was a huge question in my mind whether the wedding would take place, even just before the last few pages of the book.
I like both H/h in this series. ...more
