I have been so behind in my reviews, I really hate when that happens. I am really moving on in this series and found out something new when I started this series, and that is that I like the historical mystery genre. I felt like I time traveled to the Regency period and I loved the knowledge that I received, I have learned so much about this period. I felt like I was there. The mysteries are all so good and I feel that I got to know the characters so well.

Sebastian St. Cyr is drawn to a case where the victim, Stanley Preston, was beheaded after being stabbed. Preston was the cousin of the Home Secretary so it is a high profile murder with a host of equally high profile suspects, including Simon Oliphant. Needless to say, it puts Sebastian and his family in the killer's crosshairs.

Bumping this up to five stars on reread. Harris just does too good a job at crafting her mysteries and recreating regency London on the page. And Sebastian's growth from reckless, angry man to that of one who knows deep love and who doesn't want to lose it is a fine thing to see. Toss in some violent murders, a few mouldering old heads, a spinster lady author and the stage is set for another fine addition to the series.

This is a wonderful mystery that has you second guessing all the way through it. Blending to line between fiction and fact, Jane Austen's family makes an appearance. I was more than a little put off by the macabre collections some of the characters had.
Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is called to the scene of a gristly murder. This time the victim, Stanley Preston is a wealthy, ambitious, social climbing collector. His collection is macabre, and He isn't alone in his hobby. There are at least ...more

When the decapitated corpse of a West Indies slave owner is discovered on an isolated bridge next to a relic from Charles I's coffin, Sebastian St. Cyr and his wife Hero are drawn into a macabre investigation with a host of suspects. These include a malicious curiosity dealer, an injured officer in His Majesty's army as well as Jane Austen's banker brother, and a vindictive foe from Sebastian's past.

I'm sorry!? Jane Austen is in this novel? It was a nice fun surprise in another dark mystery with a murder from the present and past. There was a lot going on in this novel. Jarvis, Hero's father, is following his own agenda no matter the consequences to others. Sebastian and Hero have a sort of a new rhythm to working together on cases. Yet, Sebastian cannot help but want to keep his wife clear of danger...even when it seems like her father is the cause. ...more

This took me a while to get into. It felt kind of repetitive with the constant going back and forth interviewing different suspects and not much going on for the first half of the book. The second part of the book improved because now the interviews were giving some results and the background of the suspects were getting more flushed out. I liked it but not one of the better ones in the series.

5+ stars. This series just keeps getting better and better! While you can read this book as a stand alone, do yourself a favor and read the series from the beginning. The layering of character development and story arc over all the books adds so much depth and meaning to each subsequent book.
I felt this book was exceptional because not only did we get a very well crafted crime but we got to spend more time with Sebastian and Hero (and little Simon!). It was so interesting to get a better picture ...more

Stanley Preston, a wealthy, socially ambitious plantation owner viciously decapitated. A link between this killing and the beheaded of King Charles, 1648. Now, Sebastian must find out who killed Stanley Preston. This is the 10th book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. If you like books about people being beheaded, then you will love this series. Book is highly recommended!

I love these characters the more I get to know them. Hero and Sebastian's relationship is growing and solid.

I feel like I need to give this bonus stars for featuring Jane Austen! I loved seeing the ton reading her books - especially the Duchess. I got a big kick out of it. The mystery was a good one, but it felt rushed toward the end. The confrontation with the killer was a little bit of a letdown to be honest.
I was excited to have Jamie Knox appear again. I am desperate to know his connection to Sebastian and am glad the next book will explore that relationship. I'm glad I picked it up from the libr ...more
