Update from Reread 5/1: My original rating and comments stand. Just as good the second time around.
It's been a year since Jane Rizzoli's encounter with the now jailed Surgeon and she's still recovering. Not so much from her physical wounds but the deeper ones no one can see. When she's called to a crime scene by another detective from a different squad, Rizzoli must face the horror all over again as she finds similarities to the Surgeon's work.

RATING: 4 STARS
(Review Not on Blog)
The second book in the Rizzoli and Isles series is just as chilling and suspense as The Surgeon. I would recommend reading The Surgeon first as it gives the creepy background to Warren. This series is gritty and so addicting. Gerritsen must have some medical background as there some descriptions and words beyond my understanding, but it sounds legit. ...more

The Apprentice
5 Stars
Synopsis:
It is another hot summer in Boston, and a sadistic serial killer is on the loose again. Detective Jane Rizzoli is drawn into the case as the murders are reminiscent of Warren Hoyt’s rampage, and she forced not only to deal with a secretive FBI Agent but must also confront her worst fears when Hoyt escapes custody and joins forces with the city’s newest monster.

This was a good and enjoyable book but I definitely did not enjoy it as much the first one in the series. I think for the following reasons:
1) At times there was too much detail, obviously Tess Gerritsen is from a medical background and there is too much detail at times that can slow down the pace and get in the way of the story.
2) I don't particularly find Rizzoli a likeable character, she presents too many barriers for me, the reader, to like her, although I can understand her.
3) I miss Moore, ...more

This is a re-read for me because I'm reading this series with a group of buddies on GoodReads. Originally I'd read the first six books in the series way back when each of them had been released and time tends to make specifics a little hazy. This makes for practically brand new experiences with re-reads. So yay for that! Boo on not remembering what I did yesterday.

Perhaps 4.5 stars. I like this series. Accidentally read #3 before this #2 book in series.
