I have really enjoyed the PBS Mystery series based on theses books so I decided to read the series. I find that Agatha Raisin is just a tad to abrasive for my taste. I enjoy a good self-possessed female central character, but this is a little much for me. The plot was what you would expect from a modern English mystery and I loved the view of rural England presented, I just don't think I'll continue the series.

A decade or so ago, I heard a BBC adaptation for Agatha Raisin, and it caught my attention. I loved the humour and found Agatha amusing. A "modern" Miss Marple if you will. I decided to try the novel a few years later, and it wasn't as great as the radio play. It lacked the humour that the narrator had. I think I read one more novel and never came back to it. Years later, the series was adapted into an Acorn TV series and I loved it. I love the actor's portrayal of the characters ...more

Agatha Raisin has had it with fighting and scraping. She has decided on early retirement to the Cotswolds, a dream from her childhood. She sells her business, buys a cottage in the village of Carsely and decamps to the country. She's bored in days. She also feels like an outsider in the insular community so she hatches a plan to fit in. She's going to enter a Quiche in the annual contest. To be sure she wins she goes back to the city and buys a spinach quiche from the best bakery in town to ente

A cute cozy mystery but I am not sure about Agatha, as she can be trying at times. I am also not enjoying the possible romance with Lacey.

The author sure tries hard to convince us that Agatha is not a pleasant person, but underneath it all is something that draws you in. You find yourself smiling at her brash attitude and complete lack of self-awareness. She does things the way she likes and doesn’t really have much consideration, but she also is funny and adorably curmudgeonly as well.
