Damasio - one of the leading researchers in this area - explains how reasoning is seriously impaired when an individual loses the capacity to add an emotional valence to a thought. Damasio concludes that the Cartesian idea of a disembodied mind has impeded the development of a scientific account of human nature and has impaired the efficacy of Western medicine.
