This was such a fun read! I have had my eye on this series for quite some time and finally got around to buying it. I thought that this book was a really solid first installment to a series - I got a good sense of the world, great establishment of characters, and a enticing plot that sets up potential drama for later books.

Actual rating 3.75 stars I really had a blast reading this book. The writing was hilarious I liked all the characters and everything gets tied up by the end. Even though it's part of a 5 book series. My only issues where I wish the chapters where somewhat shorter. I like the length of the book but shorter chapters so better designed for breaks for people that don't like to stop reading in the middle of a chapter. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series.

This was a jolly good romp! And I use that phrasing purposefully, the likes of which Gail Carriger does often and at first I found this propensity of her writing style a bit wearing and then I decided to just go with it because it was, indeed, jolly good fun. I found Alexia to be a promising character, a strong-willed female who has room to improve even further in terms of characterisation, and something that I hope to see in later books. I love this book for all that it has to offer. Vampires, werewolves, mad-scientists, automatons, Victorian sensibilities and Alexia. The only things that I found aggravating in the least about this book were Alexia self-deprecation in regard to her looks and her family in general.
