I love Amelia Peabody! I want to

Amelia Peabody when I grow up. What a great read. Love the characters, setting, dialogues, and plot. I hope the rest of the series holds up.

★★★★★ Loved the book so much, I had to listen to the audiobook! Wonderfully narrated by Barbara Rosenblat.

Amelia Peabody is an independent woman. After caring for her father until his death, she learns that she has inherited his considerable fortune and decides to travel the world. She's 32 but proprieties demand that she have a companion. When her current companion proves to be unsatisfactory, she rescues a young woman named Evelyn Barton-Forbes to be her new companion.

I'm a bit disappointed with this, though I thought I was going to launch into a new series. it's funny, Amelia is quite energetic, but the social background is not too much my type of things, and there's way too much swooning, and it was all too predictable.
BUT I had intended to listen to it narrated by Barbara Rosenblat, who is really incredible, then I goofed and I use the wrong database of our library audiobooks, and ended up with another narrator, whom I didn't fancy too much.

Quick Summary: A spunky EP mystery
My Review: Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters is book one in the Amelia Peabody mysteries.
About the Book: An independent, thoroughly modern Millie sets off on a grand tour only to happen upon colorful characters and a perplexing mystery.
My Final Say: The draw for me in reading this book had to do with: A strong female lead, the setting of Egypt, and the reputation of the series. Peters did a great job with this introduction to the Amelia Peabody book ...more

Have to admit I was disappointed in this book. It took a long time to set the scene and introduce the characters, so plodded along for quite a while at the beginning. The front of the book also describes it as a murder mystery, but the first murder mystery I've read where no one got murdered. It is a cozy but possibly a bit too cosy for me. It is the first book in the series so possibly they get better. 2.5 stars.

Ummm... Amelia Peabody is pretty freaking awesome! She's interesting, kind, not missish at ALL, intelligent, strong-willed, and just a LOT of fun to read about!
Radcliffe Emerson is grumpy. And FANTASTIC.
The two main characters actually really remind me of the hero and heroine from Soulless, except without the paranormal elements...

This historical cozy mystery series has long been on my TBR list. I actually jumped into the series at Book #3 (The Mummy Case) because I read that each book stands alone, but I was so intrigued with the references to the past that I stopped listening a couple of hours in and then downloaded this first book in the series.
The setting of the story is 1884, and the main character is British Amelia Peabody who is a "spinster" by the standards of that era. She's 32 years old (egads!) and the youngest ...more

It's books like this that make me really glad that I do not read books in order. I had already fallen in love with this series and the characters before I read this first book. It took a lot of time for Peters to develop the plotline and story in this book, but she moves more quickly in later episodes. I gave this 3 stars for the potential and the series I know it turns into later.

I know I read this when I got out of college (so mid-90s) but it was so familiar as I was reading it. It really felt like something I’d just read. Brains/memory is so weird! I guess it really made an impression. 😂 Anyway, it was just as enjoyable the second time around and I’m on to the next one. 😊
