I simply do not understand the love for this novel. The whole process of reading this book was painful and slow. There was very little about the book I enjoyed.
It's not that the novel is poorly written. In fact, it is expertly crafted by an author who is clearly a supremely gifted wordsmith. The fact it was so well written was the only thing that kept my review from being 1 star.

Marquez was one of the finest writers of our time and he was a master of weaving characters and plot in order to show the realistic side of life. The hard part of reading this book is keeping track of the people in the different 100-year plots with all the same last names as it is a story of the same family. 100 Years of Solitude is a must-read for anyone interested in magical realism and the beauty of South American literature.

I had always wanted to read this book, I may have tried in French a long time ago, when I was not as patient.
Actually, as soon as I plunged into it, I got totally hooked. The characters are fascinating – you’d better print the genealogy of the family to help you though; you can find a good one on wikipedia. They are fascinating, because they are so human, and at the same time all a bit weird, or totally crazy; they are also very passionate people
