This is a beautiful but heartbreaking novel written about German-occupied war-torn France during WWII. It takes place in Carriveau and is mainly about two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle Mauriac. Isabelle is rebellious and 18 years old when she falls in love with Gaetan. When he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and becomes known as The Nightingale while risking her life to safe others. It is a story of survival, love and freedom and shows Isabelle's courage during this epic period of war. ...more

It's so-SO Good!
I was a little hesitant to read this book at first. While Kristen Hannah is very talented and gifted in her storytelling, sometimes her writing is not as intense as I usually like. This book proves me wrong on that account!
It started a bit slow --- two sisters, France, WWII --yeah, yeah, same old story-- but it was so much more! So Much!! (again, I have no words)
One quarter of the way into it, that's all I wanted to do---listen.

I received this book as a goodreads first read giveaway prize. I am giving it an honest review in return.

As with many before me, it has taken a few days for me to gather myself to write this review. I was both amazed and truly moved by this book. From track 6 on of the last disc I cried as I listened to the conclusion to this beautifully written tragic yet empowering novel.
