This was the first time that I’ve read a CHARLEY DAVIDSON novel, so I was a little worried that the story just wouldn’t be the same without Lorelei King’s narration, and yes I did miss her sultry voice (audiobook’s been pre-ordered!), but I regret nothing. EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was the installment that I’ve been craving since Darynda Jones began laying her trail of breadcrumbs in FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT. We get answers to oh so many questions, to the point that I’ll b Reviewed by: Rabid Reads.

This was the first time that I’ve read a CHARLEY DAVIDSON novel, so I was a little worried that the story just wouldn’t be the same without Lorelei King’s narration, and yes I did miss her sultry voice (audiobook’s been pre-ordered!), but I regret nothing. EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was the installment that I’ve been craving since Darynda Jones began laying her trail of breadcrumbs in FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT. We get answers to oh so many questions, to the point that I’ll be hitting play on my iPhone the moment it shows up because one pass wasn’t nearly enough.

Lately this series has been on my ‘easy listening’ playlist thanks to it’s snarky humour, scorching romance, and the fact that it’s, for the most part, mindless entertainment. Well, that all changes with this latest addition; Charley’s working a case—from the confines of a convent no less—and her latest problematic spooks aren’t stalking her in order to cross over. Oh, and she’s eight months preggo. AND, the prophesy is not even close to being done with her yet. I typed up a list of must-remember events, and I have sixteen bullet points. SIXTEEN!

I found that the author waited a touch too long to fill readers in on what’s what; it seemed like she saved every single reveal for this installment, and as much as I loved finally getting to open Pandora’s Box, it was a bit much to take in all at once. Practically every page had an ah-ha moment, but as gratifying as the discoveries were, this novel wasn’t nearly as funny as some of the previous volumes, so while it was a strong addition in many respects, it didn’t deliver in all areas. Still, the Mr. Wong mystery was solved, that’s all that matters.

Jones definitely hit all of the right notes where my favourite characters were concerned. Cookie & Ubie are sneaking up on Charley & Reyes, and I’m really diggin’ Osh too. I even started to like Denise, Davidson’s witch of a stepmom, which was weird, but I’m so over her now. I was however disappointed that there’s still drama between the lead couple; they persist on doing stuff behind each other’s backs. I mean, it’s looking like their kid might be Earth’s only hope, so maybe they should get their act together because the fate of humanity quite possibly hangs in the balance. Just a thought.

EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was a critical book in the CHARLEY DAVIDSON series, and despite my minor quibbles, I will be downloading the audio on Tuesday, and spending the next nine hours with Darynda Jones and Lorelei King for a repeat performance! ...more

Charley and Reyes are living in an abandoned convent to protect their soon to be born baby “Beep” and in typical Jones fashion; we have a lot going on. Old friends and allies are popping in, the front lawn is covered with dead people and Charley is ready to pop. A nuptial is about to take place on the grounds, Mr. Wong has magically appeared and is in the corner. Kit shows up with a missing child case. The case Charley was secretly working on produces answers and unexpected results. A young ghost needs help and there is a wailing woman in Charles closet…yeah life is good.
It is a character reunion! So many characters begin appearing at the convent and it was delightful seeing them and learning new developments. Jones takes secondary characters and gives them pivotal roles for future novels. Folks you will not be able to set this down. Call your boss now. You need a mental health day.
For fans, this book might make you pee your pants a little because we get answers. I am talking big answers! Ones that have driven us crazy for example, “Who is Mr. Wong?” or “Who sent the twelve hell hounds?’ and so much more.
Twists, turns and oh baby, Reyes is in trouble! Jones continues to surprise me and it is clear she knows what direction she is taking this story and these characters. It is one hell of ride. While we see some of Charley’s wit and sarcasm and get some heated moments with Reyes this story is much more serious. The ending was brutal but it is not a cliffhanger. Jones likes to deliver these zingers and while it is clear where we are heading the last chapter will bring excitement, tears and have you contemplating driving to New Mexico for an advanced copy of Dirt on Ninth Grave. Unless you are up for a road trip and possible jail time, you will just have to wait like the rest of us for January 5, 2016.

If you are a reader of my reviews, it’s no surprise to you that I have a love-hate affair with the Charley Davidson series. While Charley is one of my favorite characters in literature, she’s also one of the most frustrating. And after having several issues with the previous two books, reading Eighth Grave After Dark became a “make or break” book for the series. While I still had some issues with the book, it is by and large a step above the subsequent two titles. I did make one big change this If you are a reader of my reviews, it’s no surprise to you that I have a love-hate affair with the Charley Davidson series. While Charley is one of my favorite characters in literature, she’s also one of the most frustrating. And after having several issues with the previous two books, reading Eighth Grave After Dark became a “make or break” book for the series. While I still had some issues with the book, it is by and large a step above the subsequent two titles. I did make one big change this time around… I listened to the audiobook rather than read the story. I realized that I needed to step away from the trappings of the written word and my note taking, and rather just sit back and enjoy the story. I think that went a long way towards helping me reconnect with Charley and the gang.

Picking up eight months after the conclusion of the previous novel, we find out that Charley and Reyes have moved into an old convent outside of Albuquerque - onto sacred ground - to keep the 12 hellhounds away from attacking Charley, Reyes, and their unborn daughter, Beep. The story opens with a special wedding between Charley’s Uncle Bob and her best friend and partner, Cookie. Unfortunately, evil doesn’t stop for the festivities, and soon Charley and Cookie find themselves working on a missing persons case for Special Agent Carson. And of course, Charley, once again, makes her own way into trouble.

As I mentioned, overall Eighth Grave After Dark was much better than the sixth and seventh books. Two of my biggest complaints with those books were 1) inconsistencies and continuity errors and 2) too many subplots and storylines, especially ones that didn’t give value to the overall story. I am very happy that Eighth Grave After Dark did not fall victim to these pitfalls. The primary storyline of the missing girl was entertaining and kept my interest, and I was glad it didn’t have any misdirects, although it did result in a trip Charley won’t soon forget. And per usual, there was a ghost who need Charley’s help, leading to another enjoyable subplot, again, with consequences that were a direct result of the storyline. Additionally, the book does a great job finally answering some long running questions that have been dragging from book to book.

Unfortunately, it’s not all sunshine and roses, as my biggest issue with the series is Charley herself. We are now in the eighth title and Charley’s seen and experienced many things. Her life has been put at risk, usually because of her own actions, too many times to count. She’s hurt and been hurt by Reyes because of lies. Yet, has our heroine learned one thing from all of this? Has she matured? NO SHE HASN’T. Not one bit. I can’t tell you how frustrated I was by some of the actions she took, knowing it could potentially damage her marriage or harm herself. And Reyes isn’t much better. He also kept secrets from Charley, resulting in her being put in harm’s way. I was very frustrated with Charley and Reyes' interactions when it came to honesty and working together. While they are hot and steamy, I can’t get behind a couple that constantly disregards the other when making any type of decision.

As for future books... First, let me say that I will definitely read/listen to the next book. However, I'm not necessarily a fan of where the author takes Charley’s story at the end of the book. I loved what lead up to it, and was soothed a bit by Reyes POV after it, but I’ll reserve final judgement until after I see what happens next.

The narration of the story by Lorelei King was highly enjoyable, although it took me a couple of hours listening until I stopped hearing Mercy Thompson and Adam (another series Ms. King narrates). Listening to the title definitely helped me learn to enjoy this series again. Ms. King's voice is perfect for the narration and Charley’s snark, but I was not as impressed with her male voices, and some of the male voices were difficult to distinguish.

In the end, I liked and enjoyed Eighth Grave After Dark, even with my issues with Charley and Reyes. Overall, the book flowed from one plot to another, and the storytelling was much less chaotic than in recent releases. I appreciate that most storylines were addressed, and I really liked the direction almost every subplot took.

The last few books of the series have been on the so so side for me but I actually really liked Eighth Grave After Dark. The audio performance of Charlie and Co has finally clicked for me. The cast has really solidified in this and the wedding, the birth, the two mysteries and the 'Reyes Time' were all good. I do still have problems with mentions of Danger and Will Robinson, especially during love scenes -just pulls me out of the moment - but I've built up a tolerance to the rest of Charlie's sn ...more

Oh how I eagerly waited to get my hands on this. Debated between the need to read it as soon as I had it in my hands or wait until closer to the release of the next book… Why? Such an awesome story leaves you wanting more and the waiting can be a killer - so it is a matter of deciding on which type of waiting you want to endure?

There were times that the quips from Charley made me roll my eyes, it seemed like every other comment was one and it was too much.

The family drama was interesting. So much was revealed, so much will affect the future. I found myself yelling at Denise when she was trying to make amends with Charley. For me it was a too little too late, so I was glad that Charley didn't seem to buy it right away either.

I loved everything about this installment - even if it meant that Charlie couldn't do everything she did best. However, she was able to get really good at other things instead.
There was a lot going on here, both with the hellhounds, and with Charlie's pregnancy. And of course, the action was well done, too.

Oh Baby, Baby!

I don’t know how Darynda Jones keeps doing it, but with every Charley Davidson book she leaves me wanting more in a good way. The previous book, Seventh Grave and No Body, had me highly anticipating Eighth Grave After Dark, because of BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!

Darynda is a force to be reckoned with. Not only that she has outdone herself, she just about blew my mind. Eighth Grave After Dark is the game changer of the series, and a definite must read of the year.

In the safety of a convent, Charley and Reyes are biding their time waiting for Beep to come. They continue to research on how to rid of the twelve hellhounds who are after Charley. Friends and relatives including Garrett, Angel and allies from the other side help them look for clues to solve the mystery. Meanwhile, Charley attempts some kind of normalcy. Despite the lack of caffeine, she keeps her snark in place and manages land a case to help a missing girl. I don’t think she can ever turn away from what she does. Helping is her life…her nature.

Charley still has a knack for getting herself in sticky situations. Sometimes premeditated and well, often by chance. I think this is expected of her; cracks me up every time. There’s so much going on; the prophecy, the wedding (yes there will be a wedding), the delivery, the smoking hot scenes and not to mention Charley’s emotional relationship with her stepmom, Denise. Charley and Reyes are sweet and sexy as ever. I have to tell you, Reyes is as perfect as ever!!! I was amazed at all the revelations of the prophecy among other things in this book. A lot revealed including who Mr. Wong really is. Readers will also learn more of Charley’s background which left me in a total state of awe. Eighth Grave After Dark is truly THE game changer of the series.

I also found myself laughing out loud, surprised, amazed and even little freaked with all the ghosts around. I know, I know. I am reading a story about the grim reaper. It’s complicated. I have this wild addiction to this series despite my fear of ghosts. I also found myself in massive tears at the end. No spoilers, but I know that this has to be the hardest Charley will endure.

The ending is not quite a cliffhanger but leaves Charley fans wanting more and contemplating what is to come. Most importantly, it seals the deal of having more of Charley. If you didn’t already know, Darynda is contracted up to book eleven. The next instalment The Dirt on Ninth Grave (Charley Davidson, #9) scheduled to release January 5th, 2016.

The recap was impeccable, and if someone was to jump at this book now, they will understand what is going on and quite possibly enjoy the story. Of course, what I recommend is to start from the beginning as there is way too much information and experience to truly bond with the characters and story. I promise doing so will be worth your time.

I used to read these books; I used to pester the publisher for ARC copies of these books… until the day I decided to listen to the audiobooks. After hearing the awesomeness that is Lorelei King, I didn’t want to read these books again, I wanted Lorelei to narrate them to me. So this time around, I didn’t pester anybody, I patiently waited for release day to get my hands and my ears on the audiobook and I glad I did because Darynda’s writing and Lorelei’s voice are a match made in heaven.

Everything started well in the story; Charley was being Charley while waiting for Beep to be born. While Reyes was being Reyes, keeping secrets while trying to protect Charley and Beep. They are living in an abandoned convent, confined to the consecrated grounds. The usual gang and their new friends are there for them.
Cookie and Ubie are in a good spot. Amber and Quentin are as cute and special as always. Angel, Garret and Osh are working together in different fronts trying to find a loophole or anything that could help Charley and Beep. Gemma and Denise are also there for them and although Denise pretends to have a change of heart we later see her real intentions. That I won’t spoil for you.

I loved Eighth Grave After Dark and it was everything I was expecting it to be until its last chapter, then it all went down for me… and here start the spoilers so stop reading after this if you don’t want to learn serious spoilers, I’m talking about the mother of spoilers. You have been warned… Twice.

Charley gives birth to Beep in this installment and although she loves her daughter I felt there was a missing connection there. Most of the time Beep was cared by others and not Charley. I don’t know any new mom who spent as little time with her newborn baby as Charley did. I understand she has a support group, but she’s the mother. The only friend I know who spent as little time with her baby as Charley did was suffering from a very severe case of postpartum depression, Charley wasn’t. I should have felt clued in on what was to come after I noticed that, but it was only in the last chapter when Reyes tells Charley the best thing they can do to keep Beep safe is to send her away that I realized Beep didn’t fit in the bigger scheme of things. I knew a baby was going to be a hindrance in a fight and I guess Darynda realized that as well, unfortunately a bit late in the plot. So the solution is to send Beep away with people we are conveniently just introduced in this book. This made me feel kind of betrayed… I don’t think that is the right word but is the one that closes express what I felt. That move reminded me of when Chloe Neill killed Ethan, and then realized her mistake, and brought him back to life. I felt the same way. Darynda Jones gave Charley and Reyes a baby and then she realized her mistake, a baby doesn’t fit in the plot, so she fix it by sending her away -with strangers- until it does. No, no and no. I gave up on the Chicagoland Vampires series after that move, but I still have faith in Darynda, so I’ll wait until next book to see what she is going to do with Beep and then I will decide what to do. Until then, I will be waiting with a disappointed heart for the release of next (audio)book, The Dirt on Ninth Grave on January 6th, 2016. ...more

Ooh what a wild ride Charley's life is. This 8th installment doesn't disappoint with all hell breaking lose as it always seems to do with Charley. Let's list it out shall we?

BEEP makes her debut into the world, and since Charley is in hiding from The Twelve, she's stuck on the convent ground. But the birth goes even deeper into chaos because nothing can be easy for our Charley. As a new mom, I definitely felt for her. I certainly wouldn't want to give birth in a well!

4.5 stars for this crazy adventure with Charley and the gang. I loved this installment but there were parts of the story I had some issues. First of all Charley and Reyes continue to keep secrets from each other, which as usual leads to Charley getting into trouble. Second, Charley learns more about her real identity, which I thought was interesting but also at times off the wall confusing. Despite these small issues I still loved this.
