Beautifully written but the subject matter was so dark and depressing that I struggled with it. For such a short book I took forever to get through it! I understand a book about death row isn't going to be sunshine and rainbows but every single character had a super sad story, not just the inmates! From slow death by cancer to suicide to rape I felt overwhelmed with the sad lives of these people. It seemed like everyone suffered from child sexual abuse. I see that I'm going to be in the minority with this book. I found it so depressing, to the point that I wanted to take a pen and stab myself in the eye. It didn't help that I listened to this one at work and it was boring today. I hated that it seemed like all the characters had horrible childhoods where abuse was common place. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into with The Enchanted. The story was intriguing, but it is very dark.
