After reading First Strike, the very steamy prequel to Striking Distance where Laura and Javier first meet in Dubai, I was left wanting, needing, grasping for more, since it ends in a really HUGE cliffhanger! I had a feeling Striking Distance was going to be emotionally gripping with a powerful story, and Pamela Clare truly did not disappoint!

After reading First Strike, the very steamy prequel to Striking Distance where Laura and Javier first meet in Dubai, I was left wanting, needing, grasping for more, since it ends in a really HUGE cliffhanger! I had a feeling Striking Distance was going to be emotionally gripping with a powerful story, and Pamela Clare truly did not disappoint!

Laura and Javier, both having gone through separate painful ordeals since parting ways in Dubai, are in many ways different individuals from when they first met. Both are hurting. Both are in the process of healing when they reunite. The one thing that is certain is that they never stopped longing for each other. While First Strike was all hot & heavy and full of explosive chemistry, Striking Distance slows things down a bit. Pamela Clare has written a passionate, heated romance for Javier and Laura having them connect on an intense and emotionally deep level. In the midst of it all, the action, danger, and I-Team characters that we all love are still present.

As a big romantic suspense fan, Pamela Clare's I-Team series ranks pretty high as some of my ultimate favorites. I applaud Ms. Clare for writing such a compelling and intricate storyline that not only surrounds constant threat, but also healing, compassion, sacrifice, and endearing love. Be sure to have tissues ready!

Narration:
Having read the previous books, Striking Distance is my first I-Team audiobook. I had heard that the I-Team audiobooks were very popular, and now I know why. The narrator, Kaleo Griffith, does an amazing job providing voices for all the characters and bringing scenes and emotions to life. Javier is Puerto Rican, and the voice provided for him is deep, smooth and sensual. I quite enjoyed it every time Javi referred to Laura as “bella” (pronounced “BAY-yah” in Spanish). The voices for the other I-Team heroes seem fitting too. I want to go back now and listen to the series just for an entirely different experience.

The story of Laura and Javier can certainly be read as standalone. Their story begins in the novella First Strike and continues in Striking Distance. These two stories pretty much go hand in hand. ...more

After listening to this book I feel like wrung out, nothing I realize compared to what Laura went through. Each time I heard one more bad thing that she made it through I thought, wow, that has to be it now and it wouldn't be. I'm not sure how she managed to stay sane with all the crazy. Actually, I do know how she stayed sane, it would be because of Javier and letting herself be friends with the other I-Team members.

Oops I finished this yesterday and apparently didn't write a review.

This is the latest book in the I-team series. There are bits of many of our favorites from the series and I ALWAYS prefer to read a series through in order. It adds to the knowledge and emotion, when the characters are well known.

This was my first full length Pamela Clare novel. I read about half and listened to the other half. I also read the two novellas that preceed this story chronologically on the advice of other readers. It wasn't necessary, but having that backstory, IMO, did enrich the understanding and enjoyment of this one.

Now as for the story itself, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect given that the ratings/reviews for Clare's I-team series are generally positive but this book got some mixed feedback. It wasn't necessary, but having that backstory, IMO, did enrich the understanding and enjoyment of this one.

Now as for the story itself, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect given that the ratings/reviews for Clare's I-team series are generally positive but this book got some mixed feedback. I however, quite enjoyed it. The story was well paced with a couple twists and turns. It was a nice change of pace to read a romantic suspense where everything didn't slap you in the face all at once and the H/h meet, face nearly insurmountable danger, have wild spectacular sex, fall in love, and decide they're inseparable so the have to marry each other all inside a two week time span. With “Striking Distance," I rode the emotional ride as Laura recounted parts of her ordeal, the hero steps in to flex some alpha muscle or show his more sensitive side, as shady characters were introduced that got my blood up, as injustices were perpetrated, and as wrongs were made right. I kept wanting to turn the page to see what was coming next right until the end.

As for those who said the book was filled with too much “saddness" or didn't like the two year gap between the heroine's rescue and subsequent chance meeting with the hero.... well, what the heck? The book blurb said “TV reporter Laura Nilsson spent eighteen months in an Al-Qaeda compound after being kidnapped live on the air." Clare's story would have TOTALLY lacked any realism if she'd bumped the timeline up so that the H/h ran into each other 6 months later, ignored the trauma of her captivity, and started a hot wild affair. That would have been a different book entirely.

I did however, take issue with the hero's Spanish. I'm all for Boricua pride, but if you're going to have you're character's second language interspersed without turning him into a cliche, there are a few details that need to be double checked. First (and I think most importantly) is the translation -- especially slang. Puerto Rican Spanish speakers don't use “Cabron" in casual language like Mexican Spanish speakers. In PR, Cabron has a more negative connotation. Next, you should translate EVERYTHING. You can't give readers the translation of most words and phrases, then leave a few out. That's frustrating when we don't know what the character's just said. And finally, keep it even. Yes Clare had Laura cuss in Swedish too, but there weren't any cute Swedish pet names for the hero like there were for the heroine (which was a little overused). I think if Spanish were Javier's first language, I probably could have let a lot of this slide. But the author said he was from NY -- the Bronx even -- and not once was a NY accent or turn of phrase ever mentioned. ...more
