This had all the key ingredients I usually enjoy, but for some reason I stuggled to get into this book and it didn't maintain my interest. The plot was okay but nothing more than that. I don't know if it lost something in translation but did just not hook me. There seemed a lot of descriptive passages but I wanted more interplay and dialogue between the main characters. Don't let this put you off, just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean you won't enjoy it - many have! For me it just need

This is my first book by Jo Nesbo -- a Norwegian author of crime novels, many featuring Inspector Harry Hole (I think he's up to 10 novels in the series). This is his first Inspector Harry Hole story in which the Oslo inspector goes to Sydney to "observe" the murder investigation case of a twenty-three year old Norwegian, only to become quite involved with the case after meeting the lead detective and one of the witnesses.

I jumped into the Harry Hole series with book #11 and absolutely loved it. I decided to go back to book #1 and read through the series in order. I have to say that The Thirst was a lot better than the Bat and I imagine that the author has become a better writer through time. There was nothing really wrong with this story, it just didn't captivate me the way The Thirst did. There were many parts of dialogue between the characters that was really boring and I found my attention wandering. I really

The Harry Hole series has long been on my radar, and this first in the series did not disappoint!
Harry Hole is a 32-year-old police officer from Oslo, Norway. When a young Norwegian woman (Inger Holter) is murdered in Australia, Harry is sent by his department to assist the Sydney Police. He is paired up with Andrew Kensington, and they find links between Inger's murder and other cold cases that were previously thought to be unrelated.

I’d previously read The Snowman and was somewhat curious about Hole’s start. After having read two of these books, though, I doubt I’ll continue on with the series. There’s something quite pathetic about Hole’s recklessness, and there isn’t enough stability and goodness to balance him out for me. I’d rather not spend my time reading about people destroying their own and other’s lives and yet still positioned as somewhat of a hero. The characterization just isn’t enough to keep me reading.

This is the first book in the Harry Hole series but not the first book that I have read by Jo Nesbo since this one was not available in the USA when I first started reading the Harry Hole series. I did enjoy this book very much as the character development and plot was very good. It also had a lot of twists and turns which kept me interested until the end of the book. I will be continuing with the series as I do like the character Harry Hole very much.

The first half of this book was pretty good. It wasn't really what I was expecting. It was a traditional detective tale with some philosophical musings. I don't know why I was expecting something different. I hit a wall in the middle. I didn't like the turn in action and character. He tried to bring me back, but it didn't work for me.
