5 "Altruistic, Notorious Love" Stars for the story and 4.5 Stars for the narration!

A New Top-Favorite!

I can totally see why this title won the 2016 Romance Audie award! The blurb had intrigued me, but the fact that an actual romance won this year had me move up this little gem in my TBL queue. And what a good choice that was!

I'm a sucker for the childhood friends turn into lovers romances, and the particular circumstances of this emotional story had me especially wed to my earbuds. I was so int 5 "Altruistic, Notorious Love" Stars for the story and 4.5 Stars for the narration!

I can totally see why this title won the 2016 Romance Audie award! The blurb had intrigued me, but the fact that an actual romance won this year had me move up this little gem in my TBL queue. And what a good choice that was!

I'm a sucker for the childhood friends turn into lovers romances, and the particular circumstances of this emotional story had me especially wed to my earbuds. I was so intrigued, in fact, that I listened to all 11 hours of this audiobook in just a little over a day!

As part of the beauty of this story is in the unfolding of the true backgrounds of the characters, I will avoid spoiling it for you by reciting any facts. Instead, I suggest that you experience it for yourself with no preconceptions. Other than the blurb, which I read several months ago when it first released, I based this selection solely on the Audie award, and I believe it heightened my excitement and desire to listen to the whole story as it ended up being different, and even better, than what I had originally expected.

The narration by Derek Perkins is also great. This was my first experience with Mr. Perkins as narrator, and while it took me a little bit to settle into enjoying his style, he definitely had won me over by the end. One thing that I will note is that he has a somewhat unusual sound for a romance narrator (his narrator's voice has a bit of an older gentleman's sound to it), but I absolutely adored all his character's highly distinguished and personality appropriate voices. He also projects their voices very well and nails the pacing of each scene to perfection. I also enjoyed his accents and ability to give justice to the maturing characters who in the beginning convincingly sound like children and flawlessly develop into genuine sounding adults. I will definitely be looking out for more of Mr. Perkin's narrations in the future.

If you enjoy historical romances, then I highly suggest you give The Highwayman a listen!

Be warned. There are some very hot scenes in it. And with hot I mean HOT.

Farah is a little girl when she meets for the very first time Dougan and knows instinctively that he is the one. They give each other comfort and ease the loneliness and cruelty they experience in the orphanage. But life gets even worse when Dougan tries to protect her from a priest and gets hit. From that moment on, Farah´s life changes dramatically.

Unlike the title this is everything but a kitschy romance novel. ...more

The author starts this tale off very sweet but then it turns out to be very sad. It’s a great way to grab the reader’s attention. You want to find out what has become of these two characters. She also made me realize that I hadn’t read a historical romance in quite a while. I’m glad that she has reminded me of why I love them.

You might want to be careful if you take it to read while waiting for an appointment. The doctor finally came into the room and I almost asked him to come back in five. I never thought of this before – it’s your lucky day – but this is not a good bathroom read. Family members will wonder where you disappeared to.

I’m also very pleased that I had the paperback copy. It has a very inspiring cover that I can look at any time I choose. When reading on an electronic device, I can’t do that as easily. There’s also no reason to plug it in when it starts to run out of power. Besides that there’s no clockwatching – with my reader, the clock is always popping up and it becomes distracting.

One of the sites I follow also happened to do a review of this book and had a picture of Sam Heughan and I have to say “great inspiration”. He certainly has the brogue down. With the words that this author uses, I can feel both the pain and the joy that these characters feel. Yes, I feel that the author has an interesting take on Beauty and the Beast but I forget all about that. I just sit back and enjoy this for what it is – a very enjoyable tale. Some of you may not remember that Harlequin actually had movies. I would watch them over and over again – then they just seemed to disappear. This book had me wishing that if they can have sports, food, and all types of movie channels why couldn’t they have a channel that’s only dedicated to romance.

Now this is the first book in the series so I don’t know how she’s going to follow this book but it will be interesting to find out. It will be a wait since it doesn’t come out until February but it just might be worth it. It’s titled The Hunter and since it involves a character from this book, you may want to stay true to the series and read this book first. If you want to know more about book two, our author includes a teaser at the end of the book.

I have been reading Historical Romances for a long while now and have found that the last 10 or 15 books, one read much like the one before it and the one before that and the one before....Well you get the point;I was getting bored....Until I read my first Kerrigan Byrne book. That book lead me immediately to THIS book and I have found my new favorite author! She has renewed my love and my interest for Historical Romance. Filled with shocking twist and turns, Bryne has created a gem of a story. I’d never heard of Kerrigan Byrne until this one. I’ll be looking for her other books immediately!

Dorian and Farah were meant to be. They went through so much to get their forever. The journey was wor th it all in the end. This was heartbreaking, heart warming, and eye opening.
