This was an interesting look at an English woman suffering from dementia. At times confusing, Maude, our central character, becomes confused very easily and forgets her thought or task at hand. She becomes convinced that her friend Elizabeth is missing because she's not at her home. The reader will most likely guess that Elizabeth has either died or is in a nursing home.

I saw previews on PBS of a new mystery that will debut on PBS Jan.3rd, called “Elizabeth Is Missing,” based on this novel. I couldn’t wait to download the audio book and start listening.
The plot involves two disappearances that are troubling an old lady who has Alzheimer’s. Maude lives in her own home but has home health aides who do meals, laundry, etc and check up on her daily. Her daughter and granddaughter also visit often and help with her care. Maude is determined to solve the mysteries ...more

I really like the concept here, and the trick with narrative voice is a well-executed experiment. The confusion and increasingly scary world inhabited is dealt with with a very deft and effective touc. However, I think that having cracked this, the novel spends a little too much time wrapped up in here, and could have focused a little more on developing the various strands at play. Overall enjoyable and we'll worth a read.

There are a million amateur detective novels out there, and many of them are very much the same. But I've never read one quite like "Elizabeth Is Missing". The book does an incredible job of exploring the difficulty that arises as a person descends into dementia, while interweaving a murder mystery that skillfully walks the line between brilliance and madness. I highly recommend this book.
