I'd heard very mixed reviews on this one, so I went into it a little cautiously. On an objective level, I can see the book's shortcomings: the characters felt a tad bit underdeveloped, there was sometimes a "lot going on", and clumsy writing in the form of cliches and melodrama occasionally made its way into the prose. Its roots as a NaNoWriMo novel show a bit in its short timeline (it all happens within a two-week span) and it's, "Whoa, now let's make this happen!" plot twists.

This re-imagining of Cinderella takes place on a post World War 4 Earth which is struggling with a global plague outbreak, rising tensions with the Lunar people, and on-going racism against cyborgs. Cinder is a cyborg teenager and mechanic in New Beijing which is the capital of the Eastern Commonwealth (therefore, this version of Beijing is an odd mash-up of east Asian cultures). What if Cinderella was a cyborg?

This is a most impressive debut novel with excellent and intriguing world-building, plenty of believable romantic tension, and lots of action. Highly recommended. Full review on my blog:
