This was my first Allende book, and I have to say, I certainly understand why people love her work. She weaves a beautiful, touching story, full of history and strong characters. I loved reading about the Gold Rush, and seeing it from a perspective different from what I, as a white New Englander, always saw. Isabel Allende is a master storyteller and she does not disappoint with this one. Daughter of Fortune has adventure, family secrets, forbidden love, and, best of all, true love found by the most unlikely couple. It's a fun, easy, fast-paced, and delightful read. Who said all Oprah books were depressing???

I didn't enjoy this as much as other Allende novels. I thought it was too drawn out and the characters (and their verbiage) just weren't that believable to me. And there were way too many secondary characters that really weren't pertinent to the plot. I did enjoy the setting and the early history of San Francisco, though.
