hahahaha I did not pay attention to the book's backmatter and so did not realize that this was a PREQUEL until I got to the AFTERWORD and then I was like WHOA
also now that I know it's a prequel I'm a little bummed tbh

*This is my 500th Read book on GoodReads, yayyyyy!*
Honestly, at this point, Garth Nix could write a grocery list set in the Old Kingdom and I would probably give it 5 stars. I had a great time reading this one. I loved getting a feel for the capital city during a time of peace and for the interactions of the noble families. Another great addition to the series. The stubbornness and complete lack of patience in Clariel made me like her less than previous characters. In a way I had a hard time empathizing with her complete need for freedom feeling she could have waited a little longer. It was her nature though and made her who she really was.

Well, that made me cry. I was not expecting that!
