The novel opens dramatically, in the middle of WWII, on a battleship in the South Pacific and Philip Bowman watches a shipmate jump overboard during a bombardment. That opening led me to expect a more exciting story. But at the war's end, Bowman - somewhat haphazardly - embarks on a career in publishing. He marries, divorces, has a few love affairs.
