What an amazing book! I loved the way the family story unfolded, intertwined with the historical/political story. It really drove home how war and politics are not just abstract concepts, the way they often seem back in the States, where war rarely touches civilian life.

Beautifully written historical novel set during the 1967-1979 Nigeria-Biafra war. Adichie's writing, character development, and sense of time and place are excellent.
However, like many war-time novels, there is language, violence, etc. that are not for the young or sensitive reader. For those, this is one you will want to skip. ...more

I had to change my review of this from four to five stars because I realized that over the past few months it's the recent book I've used as a standard to decide how much I've been enjoying what I'm reading. Exceptional writing AND an engaging story.
