I picked this up, along with the Queen's Gambit, because the bookstore owner recommended them so highly. Maybe he made my expectations too high, but I felt the book was good, but not "You will not be able to stop reading this, prepare to stay up all night," which is what he said. And I don't know what sort of vibe I'm giving off, but both books he recommended were about female protaganists who are orphans and have lesbian encounters. Maybe I struck him as an orphaned lesbian...

Read Harder 2020 - a doorstop of a book written by a woman
Read this book completely unaware of the plot at the same time I was reading A Woman in White (also completely unaware of the plot). Kept thinking "wait which book did that happen in??" - very relieved to find out after the fact that Fingersmith is a reimagining of The Woman in White - otherwise there'd be a lot of explaining to do... ...more
