It's Kind of a Funny Story was an Addicted to YA Book of the Month for 2014. I had seen there was a movie by the same name starring the kid from United States of Tara and the Hangover baby guy. All around great read: Vivid characters, funny dialogue, insightful, well plotted, and kind of heartbreaking. An eye-opening visit to a psychiatric hospital and an amazing meditation on the pressure of trying to achieve and what happens when you get there and it just doesn't fit.

I would maybe give this 3.5 stars if I could. Its a classic example of modern teenage angst and depression--The author spent 5 days in a mental hospital and writes from experience. Its pretty gritty and vulgar, so I probably wouldn't give it to a younger teen. However there are definitely kids who would relate to the main character, and for them this book has lots of potential, as it has a very hopeful ending.

Ned's a good friend and his voice sings out on every page. I nearly cried reading this very personal, very important book about overcoming depression.
