Not only a great story about an incredible yet almost forgotten historical figure, but also a great exploration of how within one generation blacks in the French empire went from slaves, to revolutionary equals, to a marginalized and horribly mistreated minority.

Fascinating subject, and all the history and evident research is incredible, BUT the often overwhelming level of detail of the many, many, many fleeting characters and the army stuff made it feel like a chore to read at times. I'm sure it would be thrilling to those generally interested in historical war stuff.

I'm going to put his other book, The Orientalist, on my TBR list.

Very interesting topic but I think maybe not one for audio. There was quite a bit of French history and the sheer volume of people and places made me wish I had the text in front of me to flip back and refresh my memory what we were talking about. There was a lot of info about an integrated France that I had never heard before which was just fascinating.
