I'm so glad I only wasted $2 on this book. "I'm Neil Gaiman, I'm so edgy I'm going to whine about Trigger Warnings in a book with really boring stories." Seriously, the first "story" is a poem about assembling a chair. This is why I hate poetry. Not a single one of these stories can qualify as even slightly creepy.

TW: Possible death from boredom.

Oh and if you like Doctor Who or Sherlock Holmes (not the garbage show, the actual thing) there are some boring fanfics in here for you. I promise there

There isn't a separate Goodreads listing for the short story/novella "Black Dog," so I'm marking this book read but not giving it a star rating since I have no plans to read anything else in the collection.

Neil Gaiman's books are all either immediately available or have really short wait lists through my library's digital collection, so it would appear that I will be reading the whole extended American Gods universe before my book club meets this weekend.

It took me a long time to get through this, because I kept casually reading one story and putting it down for a stretch of time. Overall I enjoyed it, of course! Like with any anthology I liked some stories more than others... my favorite was definitely "Black Dog", the American Gods story.

I'd recommend it to any Neil Gaiman fan, but it probably wouldn't be the first NG book I'd recommend to a new reader.

Wow, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed Trigger Warning! In general, I don't care for short stories. Usually, by the time I'm getting into the tale and caring about the characters -- bam! It's over. Or worse, I never do end up caring what's happening. Neil Gaiman can weave an intricate tale in the shortest of pages! His worlds seems so well developed, even when you just glimpse them for a brief moment. Also, he can tell stories in so many different ways and from the oddest sources of inspiration. ...more

I love that Gaiman wrote a separate introduction to each story in the collection, and you can flip back and forth to read what he was thinking about each one. A deeply creepy collection.
