After reading four Charles Dickens books, I think I can officially say I'm not a fan of his work and be exempted from reading him again, despite the "classics" status of his work.
I'm just not a fan of the "episodic" narration style that was popular back then; I find it jarring. In addition, there is SO much author commentary and vague summarizations that would never fly with today's editors (things like: "After he made many comments of a similar nature ..."). Once again - this would have gotten 3.5 stars had I been able to give it... I mainly feel apathetic about this book - I liked it, but I didn't love it. I'm glad I finally read it - it's one of those stories that I always hear referred to and now I can see the connections for myself next time someone mentions it!

I'm not heartless, but I just like other Dickens better. And yes, I'm squeamish when it comes to violence. I didn't expect it from Dickens, for some reason, so it got me in the gut when I wasn't expecting it. I knew the plot, I knew what happened, I just thought, Oh it's Victorian, so it will be implied or something. Nope.
Also, while for some reason the sentimental resolutions were fine for me in Nickleby (maybe because the whole thing was such a farce from beginning to end), in Twist it annoyed ...more

Not the most complex characters I've ever seen in a book, but a classic nonetheless.

I stopped as I needed to move on to a book with female characters who weren't prostitutes or heinous bitches
