An enjoyable, if flawed, account of an old suicide that took place on the grounds of Riverton. Told from the point of view of a lady's maid.
At times it felt like this book was channeling Downton Abbey as the setting, characters, and even some plot elements were so similar. Not as good as Morton's second novel, The Forgotten Garden. It was too slow to reveal anything interesting.

slow start, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Should be an interesting book club discussion.

My first Kate Morton book. I listened to this on audio-book and it was one of the best performances I've listened to to date, the narration was fantastic. Loved the story, characters, etc. I just can't shelve this without commenting on the similarities between this and Downton. This having been written first and before the show began, I can't help but hope that the author got some sort of compensation for how many bits of her storyline were used in the show.

Actually more like 3.5 stars. I fear that my reading of Morton's The Forgotten Garden first has set the bar so high, none of her other novels can compare...

If you are thinking of reading this book, do yourself a favor and go read "The Remains of the Day" instead. Same style, infinitely better.
