This is a charming little fairy tale of a book. I can't tell if it had a moral to the story (and I very much dislike that it made the protagonist never want to return to his library!), but it was cute and entertaining and very endearing. Pretty much what one might expect from Murakami. I was intrigued by the artwork on almost every facing page in the book - it appeared to illustrate the story, but in a sort of abstract way. Like buying yourself a bar of dark, bitter chocolate...and then eating the whole thing in one sitting...
In some ways, this fantastical fable feels like something that could have been contained within 1Q84. It feels like the same tumble down the rabbit hole, the same quest for an unsuspecting hero. This was interesting but just not my cup of tea. It was a little too abstract and surreal, and I felt the art detracted from the story rather than adding to it. But, overall, I liked it. For bibliophiles and people who really do want to get trapped in libraries (which is totally not as romantic as it sounds if you ask any library employee who is in the building ten minutes past closing).

a novella by one of my favorite authors?? Yes, please. The Strange Library was the perfect little book to read on Halloween. A boy goes to his local library and is pointed to a room he's never visited. There he meets a strange man and is led through a basement labyrinth... This story is weird, bizarre, quirky, intelligent... everything I like about Murakami's writing.
