I’ve been thinking a lot about healthy male friendships and how rarely they are represented lately, and at the end of this book, I realized that most of the pain these characters felt was that they didn’t know who to share their feelings and problems with or how, and in some cases it was too late. It was moving to see some of these boys finally make that connection with so many years left ahead of them.

I was reading this in spurts and finally sat and finished the second half today, which was much more engaging. This book reminds me a little bit of West Side Story (a lot of similar slang, themes, etc.). I liked that it wasn't centered on a romance. It's not only a great coming of age story, but has timeless themes and well developed characters given how short this is. This was really good.

I listened to this one. I have to say, after hearing from umpteen librarians that this was the most influential book they read as a young adult, I was a bit disappointed. Perhaps I would have liked it more if I hadn't had such high expectations.
