I really loved the style, the pacing, almost everything about it - except that a huge part of the story is based on the idea that men are owed sex from women, especially women they are friends with.
While the superficial and/or political ideals of beauty are called into question as far as Oscar is concerned, standardized physical beauty and sexual attractiveness are central to all of the female characters, including the few who are not repeatedly described as knock-outs (how dare they reject Osca ...more

I can honestly say that I don't think I would have picked up this book if it hadn't been picked for book club. I've never read anything like it, which isn't a bad thing. This is a fabulous novel. The Pulitzer was well-deserved! This is our 11th grade summer reading book this year at Holy Child. I hope the girls enjoy it as much as I did!!
"I'm a permanent bachelor, he wrote in a letter to his sister, who had abandoned Japan to come to New York to be with me. There's nothing permanent in this world, his sister wrote back. He pushed his fist into his eye. Wrote: There is in me" (267).

This book was very strange but pretty good. A lot of the nerd references went over my head--I'll have to turn in my nerd card :(
