This book is so uneven. You've got good military moments paired with long rambling classroom scenes talking about how the end of corporal punishment nearly brought down civilization. ...more

I read this with my bookclub, and while I’m glad I read it, I didn’t enjoy reading it. I found it more a military and philosophical treatise as opposed to a science fiction novel. And while I can recognize the value of this book (especially given when it was written), I wished for a more definitive plot arc and character development. I’d recommend with strong reservations and only for those interested in this book’s place in the military and science fiction literary canon.
