The characters, the setting, and the pacing of this novel are crafted with skill. While there is a little mature content, this is a literary novel and the content is not gratuitous nor there for scintillation.
This book does not have a lot of happiness in it, but surprisingly it didn't bother me. This might be because I think the insight into lower caste life in the slums was worth it. The author made some of the plot predictable (to the cynics among us?) but that didn't take away fro ...more

I could not put this book down! This is the book "The Help" could have/should have been. It explores race and class in the context of wealthy family and their servant without the candy-coating. This is novel reveals a gritty ugly truth.

This is not a book I would normally read, but I ended up being pretty interested in it. The story is largely character-driven: there are some meaty issues but not a whole lot of plot. Overall, I'm glad I read it, and hopefully it will provide a good discussion for book club on Monday.
