I checked this one out now just because it was right there on the shelf at the library, but I'm starting to think I should read the Hainish books in order, even though they aren't technically a series. I just suspect I would enjoy them better that way.

Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in an essay that science fiction/fantasy is the best literary style to truly capture human nature because you can make the invisible tangible, thus providing a writer with a whole new means of exploring us, our societies, our shortcomings, etc. While the vast majority of the genre is, let's face it, trash (though often very fun to read trash, and well a lot of general fiction is also pretty awful as well), this book exemplifies that sentiment.
