What Members Thought

Space: the final frontier. But other than “not weighing anything” on the moon and being able to do somersaults in the air, does anyone give a thought to how people are supposed to “live” in space? What are you supposed to eat? Imagine not showering for weeks. And then there are bodily functions that become less than routine in zero gravity. Enter Mary Roach, who sheds light upon the space program, how people alter their routines and lives for the sake of science(!) and exploring the unknown.

I felt compelled to check this out after reading a favorable review of it on Booklikes, and because I've found myself newly fascinated with space in the last few years. I say "newly fascinated" because I think that almost everyone is fascinated with space to a certain extent, but I've noticed its pull becoming stronger for me.

Mary Roach is awesome! This book is everything you ever wanted to know about the space program and space travel, but were afraid to ask. Plus a lot more that you'd never even think to wonder about! Plus, it's hilarious! I LOVE Roach's writing style. It was a fabulous read!

I love Mary Roach with all my heart, but this was my least favorite book of hers. Perhaps it's because I wasn't too interested in the subject in the first place and I thought the ending rather schmaltzy. Still, Roach writes about science in a way that is so conversational and endearing that you feel as if you're just sitting down and chatting with her.

More than you ever wanted to know about the science of space travel... and by that I mean that Mary Roach keeps all the unsavory bits in, from going to the bathroom in space to the effects of wearing the same space suit for weeks on a space mission. The narrator for the audiobook was a perfect match, reading with a frank, spritely tone that complimented Mary Roach's frank, humorous writing style nicely.

There were a bunch of good bits, especially toward the beginning. The first chapter is probably the best. It's a good waiting-in-line or lunch-break book, but it doesn't live up to Stiff.
