Liked so much more than the movie, especially the protagonists. Curious about the references to Cherokee language and culture -- are they accurate?
I liked the back and forth chapters between Inman's and Ada's third person limited perspectives. I loved the practical, straightforward, survival-driven character of Ruby Thewes. ...more

I took about 150 pages before I started enjoying Cold Mountain. It is dense and moves slow. It is a story that I'm not sure really needed to be told. But midway through began to enjoy the relationship between Ada and Ruby. In fact, except for the goat woman chapter I could have cared less about Inman's story. The ending was too predictable. I probably would have given this four stars if I had not seen the ending coming for 100 pages or more.

This was a good book, but in my opinion, not a great one. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but when a book wins the National Book Award, I will admit to having high expectations for it.
I enjoyed Inman's journey, and immediately recognized similarities to the Odyssey in his encounters on his long walk home. I didn't get into Ada's journey as much, but I did like the way her character grows and matures over the course of the novel.

I have to start by saying I saw the movie first (loved it), and that's what compelled me to read this, which I hadn't heard of previously
At times the tone is too cold (ha, yes, irony) for my tastes but I don't think it overly bothered me as I had Jude Law, Nic, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman et al. bringing vitality to the characters in my head.
The scene of the aborted first kiss is DELICIOUS, props to the author for it!! Worth buying the book just for that, IMHO. ...more

My co-worker raved about Cold Mountain... me--- not so much. The rest of my book club wasn't too thrilled with it either. It had a little bit too much trudging around and a was a little on the dry side.

Everyone should read this. It is incredible writing. Don't watch the movie.
