This is more like a 3.5 stars. I really liked that this felt like an extended, teen-oriented version of The Twilight Zone. I thought Tally's development as a character was believable and I liked her as a heroine. However, like most of Westerfeld's books, the somewhat indifferent character development for everyone else meant that I didn't get terribly invested in what happened to them. This book is about a culture in which everyone gets plastic surgery when they turn 16 so that they can become "pretty." The "Pretties" and "Uglies" live apart from one another, with the "Pretties" enjoying a lot of benefits not open to the younger "Uglies." Becoming Pretty is associated with growing up. The book opens with Tally waiting for her own operation -- but in her last summer of being "ugly," she meets a girl who refuses to get the operation and even runs away to avoid it. I'm pretty amazed at how much I enjoyed this book, cause I wasn't expecting much from it. It was action packed, sci-fi goodness. What surprised me, though, was how thought provoking it was. I wasn't expecting to want to read any more from this trilogy, but I've already got Pretties on reserve and can't wait to get it! ...more
