First book I've read with a split personality. When it was good, it was really good. When it was bad, it was really bad. The beginning of the book was wonderful. I was hooked from the first sentence. But then it was as if Kingslover could not let go of her characters and she kept the story going too long. I wish she would have stopped the book when the family left Africa. All in all a decent read.

The best book written by my favorite author. If you are new to Barbara Kingsolver, don't start with this. Start with The Bean Trees, and move on to Animal Dreams and Prodigal Summer, leaving this one for last. Any novel after The Poisonwood Bible will feel disappointing.
